Ulpan Or Curriculum Teaches Students about Current Events in Israel
As part of the Ulpan Or curriculum in sixth grade Hebrew, students learn the language by immersing themselves in current events in Israel. Each week, students read through select Israeli news articles—about everything from fashion to food to pop culture—summarize the articles, and then discuss a series of questions drafted by teacher Simi Hoze. The final part of this current events unit will task students with taking an article written in English and working in groups to translate the article using newly-acquired vocabulary.
“I like this program a lot because it connects students to current events and life in Israel,” says Ms. Hoze. “Students are then able to compare life in Israel to their lives here. It’s a great real-world application for the vocabulary they are learning. This program strengthens their bond and connection to Israel.”
