CREATING A VALUES-CENTERED APPROACH TO CIVICS IN YOUR SCHOOL:
A PLAYBOOK

At The Brandeis School of San Francisco, we asked, "How can we better prepare our students to navigate and lead in civics and democracy?"
This question inspired the Brandeis 2023 Strategic Plan’s aspiration: “Brandeis graduates go on to be leaders in their communities and stewards of democracy.”

To achieve this, we launched initiatives such as an annual “Justice Brandeis Day” to teach civics, partnering with Facing History to explore Jewish history in the U.S., and engaging thought-leaders on diversity and inclusion. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive approach, we sought support from The Covenant Foundation to launch The Mifgash Project, embedding civics and democracy into Jewish education to strengthen our American Jewish communities.

The Mifgash Playbook is intended to capture some of the learnings from the project and offer support to other schools interested in making an effort to bring values-centered civics education into their curricula and programs.
We invite you to stay in touch and share how this work is taking shape in your schools—we look forward to learning from your experiences and continuing to grow together in this important endeavor! Contact us at mifgash@sfbrandeis.org.
