Welcome Back (to the 60th School Year at Brandeis)!
Dear Brandeis community,
When our doors opened in 1963—briefly as The Modern Hebrew Day School, then as The Brandeis School—I doubt the families of the 34 students enrolled could have imagined us now in 2023, with more than ten times their number preparing to begin a new school year together. While our size—and likely this beautiful campus, where I sit now writing this—would have been hard to fathom for those early parents, I am sure that they would have felt entirely at home in our community today. So much of what brings us together at The Brandeis School of San Francisco was there in nascent form in the early years: a commitment to pluralism and diversity, a joyful and creative approach to Jewish practice, and a belief in the value of a challenging academic program for all students.
In the logo above, you may have noted the Hebrew phrase ad me'ah ve-essrim (עד מאה ועשרים), which means “until 120,” a blessing shared in some Jewish communities to wish someone long life—the same long life Moses enjoyed in the Torah. As we recognize the longevity of our own school community this year, we will also be looking ahead, and considering what we can do today to continue to nurture the strength of The Brandeis School of San Francisco, for the next sixty years and beyond. Please be on the lookout for invitations to raise a glass together, to share ideas, and to celebrate—starting next Tuesday the 22nd, as we ring in our 60th school year!
